Library

Our school library is an integral part of the educational program which it serves.  The mission of our library program is to provide a variety of quality reading and research materials for our students; to encourage the students to find joy and an excitement for learning in their reading and research experiences; and to support students and staff in becoming effective users of ideas and information.  With multimedia presentations and resources, a variety of storytelling techniques, and a fresh look at basic library skills, I hope to spark the imaginations of my students and to feed their minds, hearts, and souls with the good things God has created for them.

Today, information and technology play an important role in shaping our society.  Skills necessary to function in our society and impact our times have now gone beyond reading - and information literacy is a more necessary part of every child’s education than ever before.

I hope to create a foundation of lifelong learning for each student as he/she grows in competence in finding and using information by using the Big6™ approach.  This method was developed by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz to teach information and technology skills by using the following steps:

            1.  Define the task

            2.  Seek strategies for gathering information

            3.  Locate and access information

            4.  Use the information gathered

            5.  Synthesize information

            6. Evaluate the job done.

Our library lessons and activities will be aimed at helping our students to become proficient in each of these steps.

The most important aspect I hope to include in our library program is an awareness of the importance of the role of our faith in guiding our choices.  In this day and age when information of all types is readily available to everyone, I intend to encourage the children to be selective in their reading and to remember that as “we become what we eat”, we also “become what we read”.

These skills will benefit the students through their school years and into their adult lives.
