Music

Music Class at OMPH School is filled with a variety of activities for Kindergarten through 8th Grade.  These activities are designed to help students develop musical skills and to know and appreciate many different styles of music.

Singing activities include songs from our American folk tradition, songs from many different parts of the world, patriotic, seasonal and holiday songs, and songs that are part of music dramas in which students perform throughout the year.  Students also listen to music written in many styles and become familiar with many kinds of performing groups and composers.  Movement is also a basic and important part of our program as it helps to develop coordination and comprehension skills through music.  In addition, time is spent playing simple instruments and discovering the basic concepts of reading music, identifying symbols and how music is put together.

Throughout the year our students have different opportunities to demonstrate their musical abilities.  Our School Choir, made up of students in grades 4th through 8th, is depended on to provide music for weekly Friday Masses; Breakfast with St. Nick; the 8th Grade Play; 3 Sunday Masses for Catholic Schools Week; Red, White and Blue Day; Grandparent/Grandfriends Day; Spring Concert and our 8th Grade Graduation.  All grades participate musically in Red, White and Blue Day and Grandparent/Grandfriends Day.  New to our program has been the addition of a 3rd grade play with 1st and 2nd grade choir, Recorders for grades 4 through 6, and choreographed dance routines for 7th and 8th graders.  At Christmas time we carry on the tradition of our 8th Grade play in which we always discover wonderful hidden talents!

The music program at OMPH School helps students develop not only musically, but academically, spiritually and socially.  Families can continue this learning at home by listening to music together, attending community concerts and plays, and encouraging students to participate in school performing groups.
