Language Arts Curriculum

Elementary Language Arts  -  Grades 1-5

The elementary language arts program includes reading, writing, listening, speaking, and research skills.  The reading component includes phonemic awareness and comprehension skills.  The writing component includes written comprehension, handwriting, grammar, and spelling skills.  A variety of experiences in oral expression strengthen both speaking and listening skills.  Research skills help students use information from books, technology, and observation.  Through the systematic teaching of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, students will expand their abilities to communicate effectively.

Middle School Language Arts  --  Grades 6-8

The language arts classes in our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade explore different genres in literature throughout the year.  They use and refine their reading strategies for improving their comprehension and skills.  Grammar knowledge continues to be built through practice and use in writing.  The writing process is used in developing all types of written expression.  All grades receive vocabulary instruction, which supports all other areas of our language arts program.  Oral expression experiences are incorporated throughout the year.
